IFFR 2005 - “Howl’s Moving Castle”

2005 Edition

“Howl’s Moving Castle“

I didn’t get my reservation through for this one and I was really disappointed about that.. So I took the chance to get a ticket at the box office itself, just an hour before it started: I got the tickets!!! Yee-hah!
Myazaki is one of the most interesting and influential anime directors/creators, with movies like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away setting the tone for conventional animation. Howl’s Moving Castle is the newest movie from this director and it’s smeggin’ beautiful! The story’s a bit complicated and somewhat vague, but as always, Myazaki compensates with funny characters, incredible scenes and a beautiful score. The traditional hero is even ridiculed in a scene where the main character throws a tantrum, that’d make Zsa Zsa Gabor seem like the Queen of Patience.
I’m a fan of this director’s work, so my opinion’s obviously a bit biased (just a little): I really enjoyed this movie, but I like Spirited Away better. The visuals are fantastic: I’d wish Walt Disney was alive, so he could take notes and start all over.. In stead of DisneyCorp just plainly stealing from original Japanese work.
So? My conclusion: Great movie, happy puppy!
