My Top 10 movies

Didn’t expect 13 Assassins to get that high on the list. Too bad Poetry and Bleak Night didn’t get better ratings.
Oh so very happy Dharma Guns ended at the bottom of the list: pretentious crap.

Had another great film festival, gonna be there next year again!

Movie: Cold Fish (Sono Sion, Japan, 2010, 146 min.) imdb link

Date: Feb 4, 2011

Rating: ★★★★☆
(holy sweet mother of bicycle!! Laughed my arse off, sorry, other people i/t audience ;) Bloody sick+funny!)

Plot: Ehm, where to begin? A very unhappy family situation: husband and wife own a tropical fish store, quite boring and unsatisfied. The annoying little brat of a daughter gets caught for shop-lifting, a nice man helps out to prevent the girl from getting arrested. The man has his own tropical fish store and offers to help the family in many different ways..

Cast: Nice, nothing special. Honorable mention: Asuka Kurosawa for making me scared of weird women forever and ever.

Visuals: Bloody, creepy, scary. The scenes in the cabin were especially.. ehm.. interesting?

Conclusion: I wasn’t sure I’d wanted to see a Japanese horror movie lasting more than two and a half hours. But I was wrong. So very wrong. Time just flew by and during the second half of the movie I just kept laughing my arse off. The many bizarre situations and comedic scenes kept me rocking in my chair constantly.
You know when you’re in a movie theater and there’s this one guy laughing too loud? Annoying, isn’t it? Well this time I was one of those loud people. Sorry couldn’t help it: the movie was just too funny!
My favorite scene: dad character, now transformed by events, wants some quiet and private time with his wife but his bratty daughter’s being a bit of a nuisance. Knocking out the kid with one blow was priceless! And before you judge me: yes, it’s not nice to enjoy these things, but if you go see the movie you’ll agree with me that the dad was being too kind.. The daughter was the scariest thing in the movie.
Great and entertaining movie, nice surprise!

Movie: Animal Kingdom (David Michôd, Australia, 2010, 113 min.) imdb link

Date: Feb 3, 2011

Rating: ★★★☆☆
(closing scene saved the movie)

Plot: When a teenager finds his mum dead at home due to a heroin overdose, he calls his grandmother for help. He’s taken into the dysfunctional criminal family and things get worse from then on.

Cast: James Frecheville imdb link as the lead character was excellent. The maniac uncles were all a bit weak in their performances. The grandma character was nicely done.

Visuals: Nothing special.

Conclusion: It’s all been done before. Really. Even the Evil Mother Hen bit was old news. The two things making the movie just a bit better than average was Frecheville’s performance and the very, very satisfying ending.

Movie: Outrage (Kitano Takeshi, Japan, 2010, 109 min.) imdb link

Date: Feb 2, 2011

Rating: ★★½☆☆
(Takeshi Kitano’s yakuza movie isn’t impressive; trust issues and scheming on a soap opera level)

Plot: A yakuza boss is having trust issues with one of his underbosses. This leads to a top-down reorganisation of the power structure within the clan.

Cast: Kitano is in the movie, but his performance was barely noticeable.

Visuals: Nothing special at all.

Conclusion: Takeshi Kitano’s earlier movies are still on my list of favorites. After some recent disappointment movies from Kitano, this movie’s not that bad. But as a yakuza movie, it doesn’t add anything to the genre at all. Oh well..
