“The City of the Sun“

A nice social comedy drama about four friends who after losing their jobs, try their luck in the transportation business. Not really well balanced set of characters, some were even a bit one-dimensional, so maybe the plot could save the day?
Plot-wise: simple and straightforward story with some nice comedic elements and a splash of social commentary, but not really anything really thought provoking.
Conclusion: okay movie, some over the top acting, okay plot.

So, another year, another festival.. And the Sunday party for all of the volunteers that worked on the festival. Too tired to work on taking pix. Had a fine dinner at a great Chinese restaurant with a group of volunteers. The party was okay, but this year they had the most crappy DJ this side of the universe, but hey, what the frag do I know?
Oh, if anybody objects having their picture published here, drop me line and I’ll remove them, no worries ;o)

“Lonesome Jim“

But before I start about ‘Lonesome Jim’, I have to give an honorable mention to the short film that was shown before the main feature: ‘The Boy Who Was Dubbed’ - a very smart, interesting and funny story.
Another one of my favorite actors, Steve Buscemi directs this movie. That was enough for me to check out this movie. Small-time always meta-depressed loser goes back to the last place he’d ever want to return to: his parents. He reluctantly gets involved in his family’s lives and vice versa. Then he meets a single mom with a more realistic and positive look on things.
Plot-wise: liked the characters a lot - the loser never gets too much under my skin. The ever-cheery mother of our hero showing some depth at the end of the story wasn’t too much of a surprise, but still was nice. Hey, and anyone who can make Liv Tyler seem more like an actress then just a pretty face, is doing some good stuff! Even though the ending the ending was a bit predictable, it didn’t offend my pompous tastes..
But the most important thing was the style of dialogue: brutally funny and fun brutality. Almost forgot about Uncle Evil.. Heheh..
Conclusion: got what expected and a little bit more - happy puppy, that’s me!

“Shanghai Dreams“

Nice little story about adolescent love and rebellion, living with the consequences of choices made in the past and very bad dancing. No seriously, eighties China didn’t know how to dance on pop music..
Plot-wise: the teenage stuff disobeying the frustrated parents is done okay, the inevitable outcome of this clash is also done nicely. The reaction to unrequited love is a bit of the top, but adds to the overall drama at the ending of the film. The closing scenes were very well done.
Conclusion: nice movie
