IFFR 2005 - “The Edukators”

2005 Edition

“The Edukators“

Ah, a great ride! One take: Two guys who’ve been friends since childhood. One has a girlfriend. Guess what happens? Another take: Two guys have their own little way of teaching the rich a bit about society and their role in it. One guy’s girlfriend adds a different spice to the mix and then things.. change or reasonably screw up. Yet another take: a social commentary on the current state of inter-personal relationships in the context of changing ideals and social values and also the lack thereof.
My take: all of the above and a good bit of fun! The first 45 minutes was a bit annoying because you could easily predict the flow of the plot, but after things start changing for worse, you get great dialogues, nice scenes and a great change for the better. The end is almost Hollywood action movie, but still I really enjoyed it very much.
So? My conclusion: Great movie! Nuff said..

IFFR 2005 - “Vento Di Terra”

2005 Edition

“Vento Di Terra“

A very strange experience, I don’t know if this movie’s great or terrible. The story’s about a young guy and the hardships he encounters in his life: the death of his father, the pressure of taking care of his mother and sister, the short stint as a robber, his military service and following deployment in Kosovo and its dire consequences. This guy really, really has no luck: it’s a large sequence of bad stuff, occassionally interrupted by a small moment of joy and happiness. The thing with the movie is that everything is being told in such a distanced manner that I couldn’t emphatise with the main character, at all. The pace was also sometimes slow or even monotonous. But still.. Dunno, I think I’ll still be thinking about this movie six months on.
So? My conclusion: I really don’t know (yet).

IFFR 2005 - “How Arnold Won The West”

2005 Edition

“How Arnold Won The West“

Ah.. Well, I didn’t prepare my list thoroughly enough coz ten minutes in the movie I realised that I saw the documentary on the telly.. ;o)
Still, the movie is an interesting record of how a democracy can lose itself in fighting to be a democracy. A governor that has correctly been voted into office, has to fight to keep his post because of a 100 year-old law (or loophole). The law is the law, so 113 candidates enter the race for recall election, some just for the heck of it, some to protest the stupidity of what’s happening and some because they’re Arnold Schwarzenegger. The documentary shows the circus around the recall election and the masterfully directed campaign of the former Austrian Mr. Olympia, the Terminator, the guy who tried to be funny in Twins and Kindergarten Cop (and failed). Like the voice-over states: it’s hard to understand how a country that invades other countries to impose their kind of democracy, is leading by example with the California Recall. That’s the funny thing with the US; it’s Disneyland in all its aspects and like the current puppet said: “You’re either with us or against us“.
So? My conclusion: a great look into the scary reality that doesn’t get that much attention as Terminator III.

IFFR 2005 - “Cashhern”

2005 Edition

“Cashhern“

Oh boy.. Incredibly over the top, no holds barred live action anime, or something like that. Fantastic visuals, CGI backgrounds, animation and live action, leaving movies like Sky Captain far behind. But even for the genre, this story gets in a bit of a mess coz the whole plot was something that kinda passed me by. Maybe it’s the cultural devide, but the audience was laughing at scenes where no humor was shown. On the other hand, when the first unbelievable action scene was finished, the crowd went wild and started to applaud. I’m guessing that most fans will’ve got what they wanted out of the movie. For me it was an slightly annoying passtime.
So? My conclusion: fantastic visuals, crap story and characters.

IFFR 2005 - “Forgiveness”

2005 Edition

“Forgiveness“

It’s been a while, but no quite long enough for the wounds to heal. This movie’s about the tough situation in South Africa were people have to learn to cope with the end of apartheid and the changes it brings in the social and racial structures (phew, long sentence). A former police officer needs to find closure for a crime he’s committed, the murder of a black student during the apartheid regime. He goes the boy’s family to.. to do what? Well, the title’s pretty clear on that, and still the story remains interesting. The plot tends to be a bit predictable and that’s not necessarily a problem, but the director takes a bit too much time to deliver the plot. The movie may not be a very strong one, plot-wise or other, but the topic has been handled very well.
So? My conclusion: a nice movie about a difficult subject, well-crafted with good performances.
