Not a lot happened but still: we boarded the Gregoriy Mikheev with their great Russian crew. After the introductions we had the safety drill the first evening (some pictures are just too sensitive to publish, heheh..). We had this fantastic evening cruise through the Beagle Channel, great views!
And then.. the two days of Open Sea started, passing through Drake Passage, 90% of the passengers were either seasick or were staying in bed just to avoid said sickness.. This happy passenger didn’t have any problems with the rough seas, although the first night in my sleeping bunk was a roller-coaster ride of an experience..
We got some lectures about the birds and penguins and such to pass the time, but mostly I spent my time finding a nice place for a quiet smoke and since smoking was only allowed on the outside decks, you can imagine that the heavy seas sure made me cut down on my daily smoking: healthy experience after all!
Finally, we reached some land and that was a great thing to experience.. Coz that evening we were going to do our first landing!

Well, interesting flight to the city of Ushuaia. The drop in temperature was very, very noticable from 30 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees, brrrr…
But just the plane flying along the mountains was such an incredibly fantastic sight!
Really nice hotel, and in the evening I watched the final of the South American Cup football championship in the restaurant/bar with about 20 totally mad Boca Juniors fans. Good thing Juniors won after a penalty shoot out, coz these people were in agony and ecstasy during the whole match..
Next morning I went for a walk, finishing me final preparations for the boat trip.

Yes! After two brain-numbingly days on slightly annoying waters, we’ve reached the Antarctic Region. First landing in the evening on the Aitcho Islands: so weird, so exciting, like landing on the moon, but without the “for mankind” speech..
A very nice way to conclude a day..
