How I Got Into This Music
Can’t really remember when exactly, but I kinda remembering sitting at a friend’s house watching the tele somewhere during my student years (pre-internet, sorry..). That’s when I saw a very simple and amateurish video of this weird band called The Sugarcubes. And the song woke me up like I just had some pure caffeine injected in my veins: “Birthday”, of which I couldn’t understand not one word since it was sung in Icelandic.
But it never ever got it out of my head, that’s for frigging sure! The melancholy of the tune and that weird girl’s incredible voice, wow!! Ok, so it’s Björk on vocals, but that’s a totally different review.
Later on I bought the CD, this is the Reload..

Tracks that got my attention:
Traitor
Kinda defines what I like and dislike about the Sugar Cubes - I love the guitars, the girl’s vocals and the whole drama of it all. But what gets on my nerves is Einar Örn Benediktsson blabbing through the whole thing. Even though his part is as important as the girl’s, I get irritated by too much of his vocal performance.
Motorcrash
Happy little track, with a very catchy tempo and funny weird lyrics.
Birthday
Oh my [insert deity of choice]!
This is so spooky, Bjork’s childlike voice that just leaps at your throat whenever you’re not suspecting it. Funny thing is that I prefer the Icelandic version.
Deus
Your typical eighties song, but man, this is a great track! It got quite a lot of airplay on the Dutch radio.
Sick For Toys
Fun track? Not really, but I just like the drama of it all
Fucking In Rythym & Sorrow
Yes! Racing down the highway with this track playing on your stereo - excellent! (Just don’t forget the speed limit, willya?)
Take Some Petrol Darling
This is also part of their work, dark dreamscapes next to happy Summer pop-rock
Conclusion
It’s a very nice trip down Memory Lane, always is, when I play this album. But besides the nostalgia, this album still shows the unique talents of a band that went for a different approach and kinda succeeded. Bjork went solo and had (or is having) a nice career doing whatever she wants.
