IFFR 2012: Dernière Séance

Movie: Dernière Séance (Laurent Achard, France, 2011, 81 min.)

Rating:
(hmm, not really. The bad parts were the only funny/good parts.)

Plot: The projectionist at a small movie theater has to deal with the imminent closing of the theater and with his other.. obsession.

Cast: Lead character performed nicely.

Visuals: The scenes in the cellar were creepy enough.

Conclusion: Had a lot of potential: a classic horror movie plot with a French twist. But, alas, twas not meant to be. Really, the horrible parts were the most entertaining, but it’ll never achieve cult status in Bad Taste, just too mediocre.

IFFR 2012: Unfair World

Movie: Unfair World (Filippos Tsitos, Greece, 2011, 118 min.)

(the least weird of the Greek movies this year, nothing special)

Plot: It’s hard to be honest in a dishonest world. Sotiris has almost given up. Luckily he still has his work as a cop, which provides a modest opportunity to fight the system.

Cast: Nice cast.

Visuals: Nothing special.

Conclusion: I like how the story started out, the philosophical approach to Honesty. But like most cerebral observations on such concepts, the story gets stuck in drudgery and takes way too much time to come to a conclusion. A conclusion, which didn’t really make an impression on me..

IFFR 2012: Romance Joe

Plot: A filmmaker with writer’s block is given stories by a fun-loving waitress in exchange for night-time overtime.

Cast: Lead actress was very entertaining.

Visuals: Nothing special.

Conclusion: Great story-telling story-telling about story-telling. A bit slow sometimes, but it was fun.

IFFR 2012: Francophrenia

Movie: Francophrenia (or: Don’t Kill Me, I Know Where the Baby Is) (Ian Olds and James Franco, USA, 2012, 69 min.)

(can’t tell if pretentiously serious, pretentiously crap or just trollin’..)

Plot: When James Franco announced he was to play a role in the TV series General Hospital, it caused quite a stir. Franco is known as a serious actor, so what was he doing in a soap series?

Cast: James Franco.

Visuals: Like a bad acid trip only to find out you drank sugar water..

Conclusion: Nah.. Just crap..

IFFR 2012: Girimunho

(festival fatigue, nodding off during 1st half o/t film. Beautiful visuals, lovely story)

Plot: Bastu (81) has just lost her husband; the grandchildren and her girlfriend Maria help her to pick up the thread again.

Cast: Nothing special

Visuals: Very lazy, sometimes dreamy visuals.

Conclusion: Have to admit, I was kinda tired when I saw the movie, so I missed a bit. Looking back a month later: can’t remember a fucking thing (C.R.A.F.T.)
