Movie: The Eighteen Who Stirred up a Storm (Yoshida Kiju, 1963, Japan, 108 min. ) imdb link

Date: Jan 29, 2010

Rating: ★★★★★
(Just an incredibly simple and beautiful movie experience.. )

Plot: 18 young and rowdy men from 60s Osaka arrive at a wharf as cheap
labor forces. They’re outsiders in a small community and that leads to some confrontations.

Cast: Decent cast, decent performances.

Visuals: Beautiful black and white imagery from the 60s. A lot of classic shots and use of lighting, for example the bedroom scene after the Horrible Deed with the lamp swinging back and forth.

Conclusion: I loved it: story was kinda predictable but entertaining, the visuals were strong and functional – I guess just the whole retro-while-not-being-retro thing worked very well, it’s a joy to behold!
