IFFR 2009 – Oh My Soul
Movie: Oh My Soul (Nicholas Monsour, USA, 2009, 70′) ![]()
Date: Jan 28, 2009
Rating:

(Short, sweet, weird..)
Plot: Two sleepy people’s stories are told seperately, until they inevitably come together: a Chinese woman with a strong link to her childhood and a Colombian homeless guy with some mental issues.
Cast: Strong performances by the two lead characters.
Visuals: The dreariness of the story was well visualized, no primary colors, just drab and gray colors.
Conclusion: Loved the sweet and surprising ending and again, they managed to tell the story in an efficient 70 minutes. The movie won’t blow your mind, but it’s entertaining movie festival stuff. Still got the image of the bath tub in the back of my mind..
Also loved the mix of cultural styles and music (the quest for the soundtrack begins!)

Did you find the soundtrack yet?
I agree very much with your review of this film… nothing amazing, just a quirky original and fun film festival experience by a humble young director with some interesting ideas that I’ll remember for a while. And I’m very grateful for discovering the music of Tinariwen thanks to this film! The two most amazing songs were from their album “Aman Iman”. Check out “Cler Achel” at their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/tinariwen . And the closing song (the one the little girl sang along to) is “Ahimana”: http://audiblevitamins.com/2008/03/15/tinariwen-ahimana/
yeah, and I’m very grateful to you for finding Tinariwen, not sure if I’ll be able to appreciate a whole album of the stuff, but that’s part of the adventure
also, gotta set myself up with a gravatar account now, heheh..
