IFFR 2005 - “Yasmin”

2005 Edition
Here’s a movie that’ll be popping up in my brain at random intervals the next coupla months. Is it a great movie? It’s okay, but I liked the way the story was depicted. It’s another post 9/11 flick, but from the point of view of a young Islam woman in the North of England (subtitles were almost needed). This girl lives her double life of semi-obedient muslim woman and Westernised liberated woman reasonably well, until the towers get destroyed. Her life changes, her double-life changes, everything and everyone changes. The performances were very good and the usual shots of urban-rural life were nicely done. The plot could’ve resulted in a three-hour yarn that would’ve bored me very easily. Now you get a condensed hour and a half presentation that can give the audience the feeling that thing’re moving a bit too fast, but I prefer this condensed approach.
So? My conclusion: Good movie.
